Request a Monster!

The culmination of 24 years of pen and paper design. A balanced classless system designed from the ground up.

Aspect has an easy to learn combat system that uses the same basic mechanics for physical, mental, and social combat - allowing you to play as a diplomat, sage, warrior, or anything you can dream of, and still contribute to the adventure in exciting ways.

I have some homemade races I created for a different game system that I'm interested in trying to convert for Aspect once I get myself a book. I will find my notes and post the ideas here a bit later (maybe not this weekend as I have a party to prepare for. Huzzah July 4th!) just to see if you guys think it would be possible and either difficult or easy.

We do have the wolfen race and a few others that work well for werewolves, but I'll see about making some. The Form of the Wolf power from the divine transformation powerset seems like a good fit here, too.

If I manage to whip up a few before the weekend is out, I'll get the pdf posted here.

Here are the three werewolves I coooked up, I expect I'll probably make another Solo grade one. These ones assume that werewolves are always just in werewolf form once they contract lycanthropy. If you want to go with the shapeshifty ones, use these stat blocks for while they are in werewolf form (be sure to pick a monster grade that matches or exceeds the previous form).

Thanks for the werewolves! I'll definitely be trying them out.

I finally found my notes on my race creations and I didn't actually make as many as I thought that I had. The one I'm most interested in is a plant golem. It is made up mostly of a vine-like vegetation that form the basis of most of its powers. It has stretchy limbs for greater reach than normal, extra limbs for better grab attacks/carrying things/attacking multiple targets etc, flexible limbs that are used like whips, "golem" capabilities such as extraordinary senses, immune to crits and stuns (yeah, this is an older ability), and resistances. It's defining power, however, is the ability to turn into a swarm of snake-like vines that can disperse and then reform at a later point and place. This of course means that it will take on swarm traits like being able to squeeze into impossibly small spaces and taking less damage from melee type attacks.

The other races would probably be better made as offshoots of existing races, but I'm curious how easy it would be to make them in the game. The first group would be based on humans and would be a sort of engineered soldier. They were slightly tougher than ordinary humans, but their powers mainly revolved around controlling the elements (air, earth, fire, and water)through telekinesis. Particularly, making weapons out of an element was a key note that you were fighting one of these. There was also a half-breed version that could only control one element and had some "normal" human benefits as well. This seems to be easy to remake using the elementalist or transmuter as a basis, but would be more class based rather than race based. One "rare" occurrence among this race was the individual who learned how to change the elements from one form into another, for example: changing a brick wall into air so he could escape and sealing it behind him again. (this was limited by how much mass he could change per action)

The last one I had made was a cat based race similar to the catten. My race was based on an amazonian type culture and the race hadn't developed opposable thumbs. Instead they had developed telekinesis that they would use to assist them in holding weapons and mundane items. They also had developed telepathy as a side effect of their telekinesis (mental training increased both aspects of mental projection). Otherwise they had many cat-like qualities: jumping, enhanced vision and hearing, balance and stealth. As a side twist, I differentiated the males by lessening their psionic talents and giving them an alternate form of a giant cat. The players didn't know at the time that the mounts the women were riding into battle were actually the male members of the tribe in alternate form. It was a fun revelation when they eventually found out.

I also created some monsters that feasted on magic or technology depending on which variety was encountered (the world was a mix of magic and technology in a kind of anime setting) but the stats for these are elsewhere in my piles and piles of unorganized notes. It's been to long since I last ran this game. I really need to get some binders and folders and organize everything, especially if this system will fit my needs for recreating this setting. What do you think? How hard would it be to create or modify existing races to make the ones presented here?

Also, got to thinking of my recent d&d campaign and noted a lack of Rakshasa in the monster list. Any chance of seeing one of those in there at some point?

See? I told you I like shapeshifters...

We'll be avoiding making any races that Wizards has a trademark on. Werewolves, on the other hand, are common to many mythologies, so made sense as a monster type we were missing.

That said, I'd expect the tigren race wth a few powers from Fae Pact and Transformation Domain and Necromancy Pact would make an excellent Rakshasa replacement.

The cat race you mention could also be easily created with catten and some powers from the Elemental power source, though you'd want to reflavor a few melee attacks to creating weapons from that element. I'll have to look into the converting one element into another idea. That is intriguing.

:o I thought Rakshasa was an Indian mythological creature. I didn't know there was a trademark on it. That's interesting.

Also, the cat race weren't the elemental ones, they only had regular telekinesis. There was a human like race that were capable of using the elements with a telekinesis like power.

And what did you think of the golem idea?

The vine beast sounds like it has a largish stack of racial talents for the bonuses granted by the extra arms, and a couple racial powers. Since a swarm is treated as a single creature, dividing into a swarm and re-merging shouldn't be a problem.

A Rakshasa is a shape-shifting demon or bad spirit in Indian mythology, though all the other details of their appearance and powers that you might be familiar with are creations of TSR or Wizards. While we could probably make something called a rakshasa, to avoid any risk of copyright problems we'd need to make it a good deal different.

Hi,

The monsters I'd like to see created are ogres and snake people. I would also like to see dark elves, but I'm not sure if that's a TSR copyright. Online games have dark elves, so I thought maybe TSR doesn't have it exclusively.

Thanks,
